[VeganMoFo 2014 Recipe] Sprouted Moong Dal Chilla (Cheela) + Two Book Giveaways To Win: Hot Tea Across India and The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook

Once a week, I make today's dish (Sprouted Moong Dal Chilla) as our breakfast especially for that extra protein kick from the sprouted legumes. A simple chutney on the side and we are not hungry again till lunch; it is such a filling snack too! Also, today is the last day for the book giveaways I planned for 12 lucky readers of this blog. Time flew and still can't believe it is end of the week. There are two more books up for grabs today and scroll down to participate. I will randomly choose and announce the winners on 30th September morning. Two more days to leave a comment on the respective posts. Lady Luck might favor you. Enter today!

Day 6: The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook and Hot Tea Across India

Sprouted Moong Dal Chilla

How to sprout green whole moong (or any legume): Wash and soak moong in fresh water for 1 day. Drain and place them in a glass jar or a bowl. Sprinkle some water and cover with damp cloth. Leave it in a warm place and occasionally sprinkle some water for moisture. The sprouts should start to shoot up on Day 3.

Ingredients

1 cup moong sprouts
1/2 inch fresh ginger, peeled and roughly chopped
2 garlic cloves, roughly chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1 green chilli, minced
salt - to taste
few tbsp of oil

Preparation

Grind moong dal sprouts with ginger, garlic, salt and 1/2 cup water to a smooth batter. Add more water in necessary but make sure the batter is not too runny. Add chopped onion and green chilli. Set aside.

Heat a tawa and drizzle some oil. Spread a ladle full of batter to form a dosa, like a disc. Drizzle some oil and cook on low-medium heat till the underside is done. Flip over, drizzle a little oil and cook till the other side is done too. Repeat the process with rest of batter and Serve with some chutney.

If you have some sprouts still left, do try this simple salad, a dhokla or use as a filling to these vegan mini tart shells.

  4. one more recipe for the cast iron skillet!
I was told not to add garlic and to add a handful of soaked rice to the batter for a crispy version. Gonna add garlic next time because it makes everything taste better.
